About Ali Velshi

Host of Al Jazeera America’s Nightly Business Series

Ali Velshi

Ali Velshi will host a nightly primetime business series for Al Jazeera America when the network launches later this year. The half-hour, primetime program, launching in late 2013, will feature a broad look at the United States’ economy, focusing on both businesses and consumers.

Velshi joined Al Jazeera America from CNN, where he was CNN’s Chief Business Correspondent, anchor of CNN International’s World Business Today, and the host of CNN’s weekly business roundtable Your Monday, reaching viewers, listeners and readers in 222 countries every day.

In 2010, Velshi was honored with a National Headliner Award for Business & Consumer Reporting for his in-depth reporting for CNN’s “How The Wheels Came Off”. Additionally, CNN was nominated for a 2010 Emmy for Velshi’s breaking news coverage of the attempted terror attack on a flight into Detroit.

Velshi’s latest book How to Speak Money, released in November 2011 and co-authored with CNN’s Christine Romans, helps readers become fluent in the world’s most universal language – money. In this easy-to-read “manual,” he teaches readers about emerging international economies, how to budget wisely and build wealth, and how to plan appropriately for retirement, complete with practical executions, examples and worksheets. Velshi is also the author of Gimme My Money Back, which was released in January 2009.

Since 2008, Velshi has reported extensively on the global financial meltdown; the financial collapses of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, and Lehman Brothers; the U.S. government’s bailout plan; the battle over the fate of the American big three automakers; and the U.S. debt ceiling and budget debate. Additionally, Velshi hosted The Turnaround, CNN’s small business improvement show, which introduced troubled small business owners to high-profile mentors and then helped them develop a plan for success.

In 2001, he was an anchor with CNNfn, where he hosted various interactive shows, including Your Money, Business Unusual, Insights, Street Sweep and The Money Gang. Prior to that, Velshi hosted The Business News, Canada’s first and only prime-time business news hour, airing nightly on Report on Business Television.

Earlier in his career, Velshi worked as a business anchor for Cable Pulse 24 and its then-sister station, CITY TV, and as a reporter for CFTO-TV, Canada’s most watched local television station. In 1996, Velshi was awarded a fellowship to the U.S. Congress by the American Political Sciences Association, and worked with now-retired U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton, (D-Ind.)

Born in Kenya and raised in Toronto, Velshi graduated from Queens University in Canada with a degree in religion. He and his wife Lori Wachs reside in Bryn Mawr, PA.
